Leverage Unique Skills

My advice for someone transitioning into marketing from a different field is to embrace the learning curve with enthusiasm and a keen focus on building relationships.

When I shifted from accounting to marketing four years after my graduation, I found the ability to analyze data and understand fiscal metrics to be invaluable. Leverage unique skills from your previous role and blend them with new marketing knowledge.

Dive into networking within the industry, as relationships will be your gateway to new opportunities and insights. Always keep an eye on industry trends and customer behavior, as these will guide your marketing strategies and decisions.

Use Passion to Fuel Marketing Learning

As a lawyer who chose to change careers to work in digital marketing, I would advise you to turn your passion for marketing into learning as much about it as you can.

A wide variety of new skills will be required in this field, and there are a lot of free resources online where you can start learning them. For example, while I had developed my writing skills in law school, I needed to learn a different style of writing for blog posts and service pages. I also needed to learn about on-site and off-site SEO. While some skills can only be obtained on the job, researching in advance will help you to be better prepared when you start your first marketing role.

Highlight Hard Skills and Continuous Learning

Focus on your hard skills, such as SEO expertise, social media management, writing, and video editing. These skills are the backbone of effective marketing strategies and can significantly boost your profile.

Additionally, understand the importance of continuous learning in marketing; keeping up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies is crucial. Consider upskilling or training in areas where you’re less experienced, as the ability to adapt and grow is invaluable in the ever-evolving marketing landscape.

Showcase Skills Through a Strong Portfolio

Some advice I can give for those transitioning from a different field into a marketing career is that it’s important to build a strong portfolio that showcases your marketing skills and projects. This could include any relevant work, such as marketing campaigns, content creation, social media management, or market research.

Even if you don’t have direct marketing experience, creating and presenting a portfolio of your work can demonstrate your capabilities and commitment to the field. Additionally, consider taking on freelance or volunteer projects to gain practical experience and expand your portfolio.

Network to Accelerate Marketing Knowledge

Networking is your best avenue if you want to get up to speed regarding all things marketing. Look into attending marketing events, workshops, and networking meet-ups to connect with professionals in the field. Leverage platforms like LinkedIn to build your professional network and engage with marketing professionals, join relevant groups, and stay updated on industry trends.

Networking provides ongoing opportunities for continuous learning. Engaging with professionals in the field allows you to ask questions, seek advice, and stay informed about changes and innovations in marketing, which can set you up well for a career in this new-to-you field.

Active participation in networking events and online communities can also increase your visibility within the marketing industry. Establishing a presence and contributing to discussions showcases your commitment to the field and makes you more memorable to potential employers.

Accept and Adapt to Marketing Changes

The most jarring thing for those new to marketing is often the speed at which things change and the differing opinions around the ‘correct’ way to do things. As an example, Google rankings have fluctuated wildly from week to week this past year, and social media platforms make changes to their algorithms constantly.

The best advice I can give to someone new to the marketing field is to know that things will always change, there will always be more than one person claiming to know the only way to be successful in dealing with those changes, and to accept that those two things are normal for marketers. Some things are trial and error, and over time, you’ll find the resources you trust for accurate information, and you’ll relax and trust yourself.
