Be prepared to completely overturn the way you produce content—in my case, literally. For the last 15 years, I’ve been producing video content for brands and businesses. While different aspect ratios have always existed, the decades of mobile use gave me a false sense of security that video would always remain a landscape format. 

For years, consumers seemed content with turning their phones or viewing video content in smaller frames. Years of education and work have conditioned me to believe that a well-composed frame in film and video would always require a landscape (or 16:9) frame. However, TikTok and a new generation of consumers have completely changed this. 

Today, a digital transformation growing amount of portrait (or 9:16) video is being consumed, and subsequently, in demand from brand and business clients. This not only requires a complete rethinking of how to produce video content but also requires a re-evaluation of our long-established production gear—cameras and grip gear that is built to shoot in 16:9. To keep up to date, the video production process needs to be completely flipped; it’s difficult, but it’s required to survive.
