Write Better AI Prompts: Specify and Verify Understanding

Be as specific as possible and ask the AI tool if it understands what it needs to do. To get the most out of how to write better AI prompts, I’ve found it very beneficial to be very specific from the start. At the end of the prompt, I will also ask if it understands what I’m asking for and if it needs any other information from me.

Also, if I can’t figure out the best way to word a prompt, I’ll even ask the AI tool for help in coming up with a prompt.

Avoid Assumptions, Provide Guidelines

Prompting AI is quickly becoming one of the most important skills, particularly in marketing. If I had to give just one tip for learning how to write better AI prompts, it would be not to assume the AI system knows everything.

For example, if you want it to write a good outline for a blog post that is “optimized” for SEO, don’t just give it the blog title and keywords. Paste all of Google’s “helpful content” guidelines in first and explain that you need an outline for a blog post that meets those guidelines.

If you want to write better AI prompts some effective email subject lines for you, be clear with exactly what the email is designed to achieve, who the target market is, and so on.

On a related note, if you are using something like ChatGPT, then make sure you use the same “chat” for all of your similar requests. So, if you have a chat where you have given ChatGPT all of your instructions about writing helpful content for a certain website, which should be targeted to a certain audience, etc., then always use that chat for your content requests. You can even ask ChatGPT to confirm all the instructions you have given it in the past in that chat to make sure you have it set up correctly.

Use Precise and Specific Language

To write better AI prompts my tip would be to use precise and specific language. AI responds best when directions are clear and detailed. It’s not about asking open-ended questions, but more about providing guidance.

For example, when we worked with our clients, we used keywords around their services like “ABA Number Validation Tool” and “NACHA File Format.” We even tested new keyword clusters like “Nacha Excel.”

The more detailed the instruction, the better the output. Results? About 100+ targeted, high-quality articles published and a 64% month-on-month growth in online impressions. So, the key is precision and specificity.

Seek AI’s Input on Prompt Refinement

I think the most common problem for marketers like me is writing a detailed prompt and expecting excellent results, but the output is really disappointing. The funny thing is that the solution itself can be given to you by the tool you are using.

For example, in the case of ChatGPT, you could ask it, “How could I have adjusted the prompt to get a more detailed answer and not just generic advice? Please create a new prompt.” ChatGPT will provide you with a different prompt, from which you can take inspiration to understand what logic it is based on and also improve your subsequent inputs. I use it all the time, and it gives me fantastic results.

Consider GIGO, Provide Context

Marketers should focus on the GIGO factor to improve how to write better AI prompts. GIGO stands for “Garbage In, Garbage Out,” and it applies to most generative AI tools. Marketers have to understand that we do not have access to training data for commercial AI tools. The way you present your prompt can influence the output of the AI. To avoid the GIGO factor, provide as much context as possible.

You can do this by asking the AI to assume a personality. For instance, if you want web copy, tell the AI to give the answer as an expert web copywriter. It will allow the AI to answer from a specific perspective and reduce garbage output.

Embrace Personas, Create Prompt Repository

My best tip for anyone trying write better AI prompts is to instruct the AI to write by embracing a specific position or job role.

For example, you will get better results if you ask the AI to answer the query as a historian, engineer, content writer, or poet. AI tailors its responses to suit varied needs by assuming the role given in the prompt, thus providing more relevant information. Adopting diverse personas and regularly write better AI prompts to align with their target audience is essential for better communication and more effective content generation.

In the end, create a prompt bucket to save practical inquiries, making it easy to reuse and adapt successful prompts developed by you thus far for future use.

Optimize Prompts with ChatGPT Feedback

To write better AI prompts effectively, just type out your prompt and ask ChatGPT to optimize your prompt for the best results. Inquire about any additional information or context that should be included in the prompt to achieve the desired outcome.

ChatGPT can provide valuable suggestions and insights on refining the prompt to obtain more accurate and comprehensive responses. This iterative process of optimization and feedback will help you write better AI prompts that consistently yield the best AI-generated content.
